Rapid Sequence Intubation

The patient is a 65-year-old male who has a long-standing history of COPD. He has been having dyspnea on exertion for the past 2 weeks. He was placed on BiPAP and transferred to the ICU. The learner will evaluate and facilitate the resuscitation of the patient.

Learning Objectives

– Learner obtains SBAR report from EHR in patient room

– Learner recognizes patient in respiratory distress and declining patient status, and takes steps to initiate resuscitation

Learner recognizes the need for additional support, and calls RT and physician to update on patient status

Learner identifies appropriate safety equipment in place at the bedside

Learner recognizes failed intubation and takes appropriate steps to resolve it

Learner assesses the accuracy of ordered medications and demonstrates appropriate medication administration per policy using the 5 rights

Learner ensures the appropriate post-intubation steps are taken
