SDOH Food Insecurity, Women’s Health

Patient presents to OB triage accompanied by her 10-year-old daughter with complaints of “feeling dizzy and lightheaded.” Child in the room informs the provider that “mom never eats.” After obtaining a thorough history using open-ended questions and reviewing the patient’s available lab and imaging results, the patient is identified as having food insecurity factors, and a follow-up plan is created.

Learning Objectives

1. State three SDOH factors that impact food insecurity.

2. Apply open-ended questions to facilitate a discussion related to nutrition.

3. Distinguish between signs of pica and food insecurity.

10. Lead an SDOH discussion around food, dessert, working hours, lifestyle, failed participation in centering group, pica.

11. Follow up with care manager.
